A true leader does not climb up above his people and look down. A true leader walks beside his people, step for step, heart to heart. If they go hungry, he feels that hunger. If they sleep in the cold, it keeps him awake too. That’s what I believe, and I will not back down from it.
In my heart, leadership is simple: you cannot expect your people to be loyal to you if you are not loyal to them. You must want what is best for them, not what is easiest for you. You must wish them success, joy, love, and safety. I could never call myself a leader while any of my people are homeless, walking around with a toothache, or living with pain that could be relieved. Money should never be the reason they suffer. I don’t care how long the officials talk or what polished answers website they give. Their “reasons” for why people are left in the street, why families can’t afford basic care, are unacceptable to me. There is no shame in being down and out. Sometimes people just need a boost, a hand, a leg up so they can stand on their own feet again. No piles of paperwork. No endless hoops. Just do right by people.
God took a man like me—from a barn floor, from despair, from battle after battle—and said, “Walk this earth as my servant. Protect. Heal.
